Westside Family Health Center’s employee-driven food and clothing drive, Heart2Heart is currently in full swing.
Heart2Heart began when Hurricanes Katrina and Rita struck and WFHC team members wanted to do something to help Gulf Coast area residents. Since then, Westside Family Health Center (WFHC) has selected worthy community partners in need of food and clothing donations for their clients. This year, Heart2Heart will collect food items and toiletries, and distribute them to its patients and to the newly created Bruin Shelter that serves homeless UCLA and Santa Monica College students.
Luke Shaw, co-president and co-founder of the Bruin Shelter, said, “Though we’re only in our second month of operation, we’re already seeing a huge demand for food and toiletries in particular. WFHC’s Heart2Heart donations help ensure that the students we serve have all the essentials they need to stay focused on their studies, so that they can earn their degrees and unlock a brighter future.”
Debra A. Farmer, WFHC's President/Chief Executive Officer said, “We’re really pleased to support our patients in this way during the holidays, and to support the students at Bruin Shelter. There is a great deal of need, especially during the holidays, and we’re happy to provide this additional help. ”
At Westside Family Health Center, individual patients and families who may need support are identified, and food items and toiletries are given to them. Large donations of these items are also made to Bruin Shelter. Food items needed include breakfast items - grab and go or add hot water (granola bars, shelf stable milk, juice boxes, fruit cups, cup meals), dinner items (canned vegetables, sauces, dry pasta, beans, rice, etc.) spices (oregano, curry powder, etc.) canned meats and soups, canned fruit and vegetables, peanut butter and shelf stable milk. Toiletries include small containers of soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, shampoo and conditioner, deodorant, hair brushes, contact lens cases and solution, feminine hygiene products, and face wash. The drive runs until February 11, 2017, which is the date of WFHC’s February Fundraiser “I Heart WFHC”. Help us support struggling families and students. Donations can be brought to Westside Family Health Center’s main waiting room at 1705 Ocean Park Boulevard in Santa Monica during normal business hours.
