Buy Local Challenge Blog

Buy Local Santa Monica has partnered with the 3/50 ProjectTM and students from Santa Monica High School.  What three local businesses would you miss if they disappeared?  Your purchases keep these businesses around, supporting our local economy and a unique, thriving community of businesses.  Your purchases also make a difference to our schools, our parks and our community.  In 2013, purchases made at Santa Monica businesses raised $7.2 million for our schools. Buying local truly makes a difference.

It's simple to participate - pick three businesses you absolutely can't live without, and commit to stopping by, saying hello and spending money among the three this month to spur our local economy.  Then, go even further to support your favorites by telling us which ones you picked and why

So many options

Santa Monica Business #1: Sweet Rose Creamery

Santa Monica Business #2: Acapillow

Santa Monica Business #3: Grey Block Pizza

Why I can't live without these three businesses: I go to Samohi, so when Sweet Rose Creamery moved in, it was like a little patch of heaven moved in across the street. Sweet Rose has some of the best and most unique flavors, and it is always exciting to try the new ones. What I think is so great about the Creamery is that the chef goes to the Farmer’s Market every week to get the freshest ingredients possible. Then, they put the farmers whose produce has been used on their board so that the community can see what they’re eating and where it is coming from. I love how fresh my ice cream is, and I love knowing everything that is going into it is in season and helping local farmers.

Acapillow is a cute store where you feel welcome and comfortable the second you walk in. The doors are always open, and there is a warm light that makes one feel at home. The owners are kind and genuinely care about how you are doing. Acapillow is a shop where you can walk in, have a pleasant conversation, and walk out feeling ten times better than before.

Grey Block Pizza is delicious! I work at SMC Pool so when I have a break, it is the perfect place to run across the street to grab lunch. It is great to have so many options that you can have a different kind of pizza every week. The service is great, and the pizza never stops being awesome.

It is that good!

Santa Monica Business #1: Bob's Market

Santa Monica Business #2: Lares Restaurant

Santa Monica Business #3: Bay Cities

Why I can't live without these three businesses: First of all, I can not live without Bob's Market because it is my community's local market. I always see the same workers there every day, and they will remember you. The feeling I get when I walk into Bob's is like walking into my own house. I have grown up going to this market; and every time I go, I will see someone I know. The food in the deli and the hot foods are always top quality. It is more personal than going to a supermarket because you really feel connected to the store and you know that the workers really care.

I cannot live without Lares because my family has been going there for longer than I have lived. My grandpa fell in love with the restaurant because it has such a warm and welcoming atmosphere. He would talk to the workers there and pretty soon they knew his name. Now, my dad takes our family there all the time, and they know us because of my grandpa's tradition of going to eat there all the time. The food is always great at Lares, and I can always count on having a good time there.

Bay Cities is another business I cannot live without because the food there is amazing. It is the only place I will want to go when I am craving a sandwich. It is a place where you can go only to get a loaf of bread because it is that good. It is really close to my house and school so I can walk over easily. The service is really quick even when they have a line of 15 people or more waiting for sandwiches. This is another place that I grew up with, and I can't imagine what I would do without it.

The community would not be the same

Santa Monica Business #1: Donut King

Santa Monica Business #2: L&L Hawaiian Place

Santa Monica Business #3: El Pollo Loco

Why I can't live without these three businesses: Without all these, every week things that I eat during lunch or after school, the community that I live in would not be in a way it is now. Going from three different varieties of food to something I can rely on for superb customer service to the eccentric people that choose the same place as I do that day, the community would not be the same.

Good memories

Santa Monica Business #1: The Bowling Alley

Santa Monica Business #2: Yum Yum Donuts

Santa Monica Business #3: Chipotle

Why I can't live without these three businesses: These businesses have brought me good memories. As a kid, I would go to Yum Yum Donuts before I would go to school some mornings. I love going to The Bowling Alley with my friends and just spend the time trying so hard to beat them at the game. Chipotle is my favorite restaurant to go to at the promenade. It's the place for me to go after school with my friends and enjoy one of their bowls. Without these places, I wouldn't have created memories at these places. I can still continue with making more later in the future.

They deliver so it's better for me

Santa Monica Business #1: Pico Barbershop

Santa Monica Business #2: Coffee Bean

Santa Monica Business #3: Jersey Mike's

Why I can't live without these three businesses: I get my haircuts at the Pico Barbershop all the time. They provide nice and efficient service towards their customers. If it wasn't there, I would have to find a new barber.

My friend works at Coffee Bean, and he always hooks me up with the fuego. The pastries are always on point.

I order Jersey Mike's at least twice a week for lunch. They deliver so it's better for me, and the food is great.
