Santa Monica Businesses to Begin Receiving 100 Percent Green Energy

Santa Monica Lookout:  Starting next month, Santa Monica businesses will begin receiving 100 percent green power through the city's new default energy provider, City officials said Thursday.

The businesses -- which account for 75 percent of Santa Monica's electricity demand -- will follow the lead of residents, who began using the Clean Power Alliance (CPA) as their energy provider in February.

City Council Bans Single-Use Plastics for Prepared Foods

Santa Monica Patch: The Santa Monica City Council approved a revision to the 2007 Nonrecyclable Plastic Food Service Container Ordinance Tuesday night to expand plastics banned to include all single-use plastics for prepared foods. This includes straws, lids, utensils, plates, bowls, trays, containers, stirrers, cups, and lid plugs, according to the City. The ordinance requirements will go into effect January 1, 2019.

"This vote aligns with the City's sustainability goals and longstanding commitment to the environment, which includes a goal to achieve zero waste through diversion, composting, and recycling by 2030," the press release said.  Read more >

The Buy Local Santa Monica Committee is pleased to announce the release of the annual Buy Local Santa Monica Holiday Gift Guide for 2017.  This year's guide features over 50 local businesses with gifts in two categories:  1) Buy Local Gifts - Unique/Sustainable/Handmade and 2) Buy Local Gifts on a Budget ($25 or less).

Ocean Friendly Restaurants

SM Mirror:  The West Los Angeles and Malibu chapter of The Surfrider Foundation has recently begun a program titled Ocean Friendly Restaurants, offering a certification for restaurants whose practices are determined to be environmentally sustainable. On Saturday, March 4, the Ocean Friendly Restaurants program gathered at Bareburger on Main Street, an Ocean Friendly Restaurant, to discuss the program amongst both program veterans and prospective volunteers, as well as offer hands-on experience within the restaurant itself....
