CANSTRUCTION Santa Monica Competition - call for entries!

Dear Local Architects, Engineers, Contractors, Designers and Students of Each, 

Registration is now open for the inaugural Canstruction Santa Monica competition! The sooner you register the sooner you can get started!

Would you like to do some team building and benefit the community at the same time? Would you like to create art and give back? If so, get in on the first ever Canstruction Santa Monica.

What is Canstruction? Canstruction is an international design competition, held locally, between architects, engineers and design teams, who build inventive sculptures out of non-perishable food items. It is a festive affair that challenges these teams to “out creative” each other, involves the community in judging and participation, and benefits the local food banks. We have partnered with both Meals on Wheels West and the Westside Food Bank – they will receive 100% of the non-perishable food used in the construction of Canstruction. 

To encourage your participation, Ralphs grocery has generously donated gift cards to help each team purchase canned goods to be used in Canstruction. Your participation will help achieve the Canstruction goal of providing thousands of pounds of food to our community, just in time for the holiday season.  

The competition will be held the first two weeks of November, 2019 in the lobbies of Water Garden, which has generously agreed to host this year’s competition. Space is limited to the first 20 entries so please register now.

Our annual Buy Local Health + Fitness Festival is Saturday, September 7th @ Reed Park.  Exhibitor + sponsorship opportunities are now open!  If you are a SM Chamber Member + participating in Buy Local SM campaign, you will get an additional $50 off the exhibitor rate.  There are also special membership rates for joining the SM Chamber.

Want to host a Bike Local Handlebar Happy Hour?

Each month our Bike Local Santa Monica Committee (Buy Local + SM Spoke bike advocacy partners) organizes a #BikeLocalSM Handlebar Happy Hour event to spotlight a Buy Local SM restaurant, bar or pub.  There's no cost to host the event - you just need to offer a happy hour special for the duration (5:30-7 pm) and be able to set aside a small gathering area for our group (15-30 people) to sit, eat and socialize.  These events are held on the last week of every month (alternating Weds + Thurs) .  We promote these events via our Santa Monica SPOKE + Buy Local SM social media, newsletter + websites.  They're really fun community gatherings + a great way to promote your business to locals!  If you're interesting in hosting an upcoming #HBHH, email Cynthia at SM Spoke:  Cynthia.Rose@SMSpoke.org

Santa Monica Police Department - Holiday Safety Tips for Merchants + Shoppers

Our Interim Chief of Police, Kenneth Semko, created this helpful "SMPD Shopping Safety Tips" Flyer which was handed out at the Pico Improvement Organization's Merchant Forum today.  It contains Holiday Safety Tips for both merchants and shoppers.  Click here to view >

All businesses and property owners are also encouraged to submit 'No Trespassing Forms" to authorize the SMPD onto your property to arrest trespassers (including when your business is closed).  This form is valid for 30 day periods and can be renewed online.

Pico Improvement Organization RFP for Business Liaison/Social Media Coordinator

The Pico Improvement Organization (PIO) is seeking a Business Liaison/Social Media Coordinator to manage the relationship between the PIO and business owners on Pico Blvd.  As Liaison/Coordinator, the candidate will actively engage the Pico business owners, physically and electronically, to encourage their participation and update them on PIO programs and activities.  The position will manage social media platforsm, the website, press releases and newsletters as tools to promote Pico businesses.  Read more > > >

BeautifyEarth (BE), a 501(c)3, is the locally-founded, movement-oriented organization putting an end to blighted and bland walls around town... You may have noticed some changes in two of their focus areas, Lincoln Blvd and Pico Blvd.  They have also painted the latest murals on Main Street, Broadway, and Santa Monica Blvd, making quite an impressive impact on the fabric of Santa Monica’s streetscapes.  The results speak for themselves.  Businesses with artistic facades have reported seeing an increase in revenue almost immediately, time and time again. It also promotes reduced traffic by creating a walkable environment, deters graffiti, and helps beautify our town centers/commercial districts.  It’s easy to participate in a variety of ways:

Here’s how you can get involved:

1. IDENTIFY YOUR EXTERIOR WALL TO BE BEAUTIFIED - If you have a wall (or other public facing facade) that you know could use a fresh artistic look and bring greater inspiration to your community, please let BE know here.  You will be able to work with them and their expansive artist network on a mural, pattern, or design of your taste.  

2. Paint It Forward - Allows individuals and business to sponsor a wall in their community, and give back by investing in their community.
